FAQ about the Helps Fund and Helps Fund Scholarship

What is the Helps Fund?

It is a fund set up in order to supply a creative, God-honoring means of assistance to students desiring to attend Ellerslie Discipleship Training programs in Windsor, Colorado, but who are struggling to do so due to financial lack. The funds are allocated for the sole purpose of helping students find a “reasonable” payment plan for covering their Ellerslie schooling costs.

Who is the Helps Fund Available to?

At present, the Helps Fund is only available for students attending the Ellerslie Classic Training and the Ellerslie Advanced Training programs.

What Can the Helps Fund “help” with?

The Ellerslie Helps Fund was established to enable students from around the world to more readily afford and participate in the training programs at Ellerslie. If an Ellerslie student is willing to commit to covering the initial 45% (approximate) of their tuition costs prior to training, then the Helps Fund can assist them in creatively navigating their payback of the remaining balance due after the on-site portion of training is completed. The Helps Fund does this by covering the student’s balance due for a season of time and creating a no-interest payment plan between the Helps Fund and the Ellerslie student that is respectful of the student’s unique life situation and financial wherewithal. In other words, the Helps Fund has been designed to provide very real “help.”

How does the Helps Fund actually work?

The Helps Fund does not nullify your need to pay the remaining balance due, it simply covers your tuition costs until the on-site training is completed and then works with you to establish a no-interest payback plan that is reasonable to your life situation.

Can the Helps Fund work like a scholarship?

It can. It’s called a Helps Fund Scholarship. The Helps Fund is first designed to aid with a student’s ability to payback their tuition charges in a manner that is genuinely helpful to the student and customized to their unique life circumstances. However, the Helps Fund Scholarship can also cover a portion, or even, in some circumstances, the entirety of a student’s remaining* tuition costs if genuine financial need can be established. In this sense, the Helps Fund Scholarship is set up to actually reduce the overall tuition cost of the Ellerslie Training program for those who possess unique financial needs. For more on the Helps Fund Scholarship, please read the section titled, “How Does an Incoming Ellerslie Student Apply for the Helps Fund Scholarship?”

*student is still responsible to pay the initial tuition cost of approximately 45% due by the start of training

How Does an Incoming Ellerslie Student Take Advantage of the Helps Fund?

When a student applies for either of the two Helps Fund qualifying programs (i.e.: Ellerslie Classic Training or Ellerslie Advanced Training), he/she can also apply for the Helps Fund and Scholarship (all in the same application). A quick overview of the process is as follows:

  1. Submit application for the training
    • + if you desire to apply for a scholarship and/or the Helps Fund, you will do so at the same time as you fill out your semester application
    • + initial non-refundable deposit of $350 is due with application
  2. Receive acceptance letter with financial details (including any payment plan, scholarship amount, and/or Helps Fund assistance if applied for)
  3. Confirm your spot in the program and agree to the financial details in the acceptance letter
    • + upon signing the contract, you will be charged the remaining non-refundable deposit of $650 to secure your spot in the program
  4. The total tuition owed (minus any scholarship funds) is split into two time frames:
    • A. Amount due prior to training (approximately 45% of total tuition)
      • The first half of this "45%" is due 60 days prior to training start date
      • The second half of this "45%" is due 30 days prior to training start date
    • B. Remaining balance due after on-site portion of training concludes (Helps Fund & Scholarship able to be used)

What Percentage of Applicants are Accepted for the Helps Fund?

100%. The Helps Fund functions on the honor system. And, therefore, every student that makes a request for assistance from the Helps Fund will receive help.

How Does an Incoming Ellerslie Student Take Advantage of the Helps Fund Scholarship?

When filling out the Application there will be an opportunity presented for the student to request a Helps Fund Scholarship. Since the Helps Fund Scholarship is a needs based scholarship, a verification/reference email is sent out to help us make a more informed decision. NOTE: scholarships can be pursued for both partial tuition assistance or for the entirety of the remaining balance due (please see question: “How does the Helps Fund actually work?” for more details)

What Percentage of Helps Fund Scholarship applicants actually end up receiving a scholarship?

If a Helps Fund Scholarship is requested, we start with the assumption that there is a bonafide need. So, 100% of students seeking a scholarship will receive one, but the amount given from the Helps Fund towards the student’s scholarship will be based on 1) verifiable needs of the applicant and 2) upon the availability of funds currently in the Helps Fund. So, scholarships could range in size from $350 to $3,500 based upon these two key factors.

How is the Helps Fund funded?

The Helps Fund is funded by Christians that have a passion for seeing other Christians attend an Ellerslie training program. As a result, they give specifically to this Fund to see others have this opportunity. These gifts are given to Ellerslie Mission Society earmarked for use in the Helps Fund. And, yes, since Ellerslie Mission Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity, these gifts are tax-deductible. If you would like to give to the Helps Fund please click here. (Under "Special Instructions" during donation payment write "For Helps Fund")

Can a donor give to the Helps Fund to help with a specific student’s need?

Yes. Sort of. Technically speaking, a gift to a tax-deductible organization cannot be given with specificity to a singular person. However, if a gift is given to Ellerslie Mission Society and notated for use towards the Helps Fund, the giver could also notate their desire to have the money be considered specifically for the aid of a certain student. It would be highly likely that we could honor that request. If we couldn’t, for some unforeseen reason, we would let the giver know.

Can a donor give to Ellerslie Mission Society to help cover a particular student’s initial tuition cost due prior to the on-site training and receive a tax-deductible receipt for the gift?

A donor can certainly give to help cover a specific student’s tuition costs, but we would not be able to supply a tax-deductible receipt for such a gift. In the accounting sense, such a gift would be deemed payment against tuition costs. However, if a donor gives directly towards the Helps Fund, we can supply tax-deductible receipts for those gifts as they are given without specificity toward a specific student and are given towards the general purpose of building the Helps Fund.
